A fragrance; one of the most, if not the most, cliché valentine gifts. So why not make it worth their while? Get a scent that is unique and of high calibre. Next to a swipe of bold red lipstick, fragrance is one element that can have a transformative quality on your mood, instantly boosting your confidence and coaxing your inner Marilyn out of hiding. We put together a list of nine fragrances that give off a certain “come hither” vibe with every spritz. May anyone within your scent radius feel blessed to catch a passing whiff.
Amouage Lyric Man:
Lyric Man begins with the shrill of Rose Otto, sharp and piercing. This is paired with subtle notes of orange blossom, spices and a shade of green galbanum. As the fragrance progresses the hay-like angelica note comes through and the saffron-rose combination becomes more evident. The base of the fragrance is built around sandalwood and vanilla having an almost Samsara-esque effect.
Armani Prive Rose d’arabie:
Rose D’Arabie opens with frankly, a harsh combination of rose and oudh. Unlike Montale where the aoud turns medicinal, here it remains subdued and to my nose, so well behaved so as to compliment, rather than overshadow the rose. Oudh tends to dominate, but here it’s quite tame.
There’s not a great deal of evolution with Rose D’Arabie, though some shifts occur. The mix grows sweeter after an hour or so, but only slightly, as the vanilla note becomes more prominent. In spite of this, the rose and oudh continue to dominate. You can also feel the patchouli coming into its own here as it delivers an earthy touch to the whole composition.
Tom Ford Noir de noir:
A dark Chypre Oriental, this scent opens with an earthy mantle of richly woven Saffron, Black Rose and Black Truffle, with hints of floralcy. Underneath, Vanilla, Patchouli, Oud Wood and Tree Moss soften the intensity, making the scent a sensual experience.
This royal blend preludes with an unpredictable mélange of white flowers and colourful fruits, bringing out a joyful and intense sensation. This is followed by a playful combination of precious woods and cashmeran notes which envelope the wearer in a soft and delicate veil.
Parfums De Marly Herod:
Herod opens with a mere second of sweet cherry pipe tobacco then quickly moves into a layer of cinnamon and sugar. We used to put sugar and cinnamon on warm buttered toast as a child and it kind of smells like that. Then after a few minutes more. the fragrance gets drier and more woody.
Mancera Roses and chocolate:
This perfume lists fruits in the opening notes (peach, black currant, mandarin and bergamot) but all they do is really add a juicy dark sweetness to the silky fine cocoa note that continues from start to finish. Even the roses here have been dipped in chocolate, making their natural heady aroma even more naughty and delicious.
Spicebomb Extreme is an explosion of heat – longer lasting (think 9 hours +) and with slightly sweeter and spicier notes than the original. Notes of pimento berries and black pepper enhance sparkling grapefruit top notes. The aromatic heart is surrounded by the scent of warm spices, cumin, cinnamon and saffron, giving the fragrance a masculine, yet sensual personality. In the drydown, notes of vanilla and bourbon, which sensually contrast with the woody amber, strengthen the tobacco note, giving this fragrance real character.
Sospiro Erba Pura:
Erba Pura is a delicious and modern blend of Mediterranean citrus and sweet fruits layered over a warm and sensual amber oriental base. The extended heart and base of the perfume holds a little secret… a rare molecule extracted from a rare Indian herb. Thanks to this extraction technique called “PURA” this Fruity Floral elixir has a long lasting velvety effect and is perfectly abstracted, highlighting a person’s aura.
Tom Ford Orchid Soleil:
Tom Ford Orchid Soleil’s composition of bitter orange, pink pepper, cypress, tuberose, black orchid, spider lily, vanilla, chestnut cream accord and patchouli supposedly “captures the seductive warmth and reflective bare skin of the Tom Ford woman.”
